Taapsee Pannu, is one of the few actresses in the Indian film industry, who always kept her views openly in public. This time, she reacted to Rangoli Chandel’s remark of her being Kangana Ranaut’s ‘sasti copy’. Taapsee stated that she ‘is okay with it’ as Kangana is a talented actress. While taking a slight dig at Chandel’s statement, Pannu further mentioned that she is someone, who can never speak as such about any other woman. Here is what she said:
In an interview with ABP News, Taapsee Pannu said “Maybe I am "sasti" (cheap) because I don’t get paid as much as Kangana Ranaut. If being called a copy of such a talented actress is the case, I am okay with it. The kind of words you choose reflects your upbringing, and the way someone speaks shows their personality. I can never say such things about any woman who has carved her own journey.”
The controversy erupted in 2019 when Taapsee praised the trailer of Kangana Ranaut’s Judgementall Hai Kya in a tweet without mentioning her name. After this, Rangoli responded it and said “Kuch log Kangana ko copy kar ke he apni dukaan chalate hain, magar pls note, they never acknowledge her, not even a mention of her name in praising the trailer. Last I heard, Taapsee ji said Kangana needs a double filter, and Taapsee ji, you need to stop being a sasti copy.” Later, Rangoli deleted the X post.
In the same interview, she also talked about industrial norms, “I want to change the notion that if a film is women-centric, its budget should be lower. I’ve gotten used to hearing this, but the mindset that “it’s a female-led film, so it won’t work—just release it on OTT, don’t bring it to theatres, who will watch it?” needs to change. I hope this perception shifts because there are people who truly have the passion to make a difference.”
“Secondly, I want talent to be judged beyond social media. An actor should be evaluated based on their performance on screen, not by their number of followers. Casting decisions or brand endorsements shouldn’t be based on social media metrics but rather on the quality of work, the values they stand for, and their individual personality and strengths,” she added.
On the work front, Pannu was last seen in the 2024 Netflix film Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba. It also starred Vikrant Massey, Sunny Kaushal, Jimmy Shergill and Bhumika Dube in key roles.
