Tandav Season 2 shelved: Saif Ali Khan's political thriller Tandav, which premiered in 2021, was undoubtedly one of the most widely discussed web series of the year. Helmed by the acclaimed director Ali Abbas Zafar, the show garnered immense attention for its riveting and thought-provoking portrayal of the intricate world of politics, subsequently earning a substantial and dedicated fan base. However, despite its immense popularity, the series found itself embroiled in a major controversy upon its release, with certain factions alleging that it hurt religious sentiments. As a result, fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a potential second season, but unfortunately, it never came to fruition. Now, in a recent revelation, actor Dino Morea, who was an integral part of the show, has finally shed light on the real reason behind the cancellation of Tandav's second season.
In a conversation with Pinkvilla, Dino Morea said, “This was a show we did for Amazon, and it caused a lot of problems. Tandav was based on politics, yes, but it was a fantastic show. The second season wasn’t made because they didn’t get permission. But Saif is always a pleasure to work with, and I had a great time.”
Dino Morea's recent revelation has finally put to rest the long-standing speculation surrounding the abrupt halt of Tandav, confirming that the controversy that engulfed the show was indeed the primary reason for its cancellation, despite its impressive viewership numbers and the critical acclaim it received for its thought-provoking themes.
When Tandav premiered on Amazon Prime Video in January 2021, it quickly became the epicenter of a nationwide controversy that reverberated across the country. The political thriller, which delved into the complex world of power dynamics and political machinations in India, was accused of portraying certain religious elements in a disrespectful and insensitive manner.
The backlash was particularly focused on a specific scene in which a character, depicted as a modern interpretation of Lord Shiva, delivers a satirical monologue on contemporary issues, which many deemed offensive. As a result, multiple political and religious groups voiced their outrage, leading to the filing of several FIRs (First Information Reports) against the show's makers, including acclaimed director Ali Abbas Zafar, Amazon Prime Video executives and key cast members, thereby marking a tumultuous end to the show's promising run.
