Ranjith, a well-known Malayalam filmmaker and producer, has been arrested on sexual assault charges. The complainant claimed that he acted inappropriately on the set of an ongoing movie, according to the Kochi police. The filmmaker was accused of violating Section 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (2023), which forbided assaulting or using criminal force on a woman with the intention of offending her modesty.

The young female actor filed a formal claim with the film's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) prior to contacting criminal enforcement, according to Matrubhumi. After analysing the case, the committee transferred it to the Kerala Police for further action. The sensitive contents of the complaint were kept private during the preliminary investigation, as per the report.

Ranjith was intially brought to the Thodupuzha police station to complete the required paperwork. He was then transferred to the Ernakulam Central Police to continue the inquiry.

Ranjith has already been embroiled in a similar controversy. Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra accused the director of harassment in 2024, forcing him to resign as chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy. He said, "Sreelekha Mitra, a Bengali actor, has made grave personal accusations against me. This has been going on for a while. Specifically, a group of people have been striving for a long time since I became the chairman of Kerala Chalachitra Academy. This led to the public accusation (of Sreelekha), Ranjith said in a statement after his resignation."

Superstars like Mohanlal, Mammootty, and other actors have worked with Ranjith. He was a longtime screenwriter before making his directorial debut in 2001 with the Mohanlal-starring film Ravanaprabhu, which was a follow-up to IV Sasi's Devasuram. He is well-known for a number of critically acclaimed movies, including Indian Rupee, Thirakkatha, and Ravanaprabhu. In addition to winning six Kerala State Film Awards, he also received National Film Awards in 2008 and 2011.
