The deteriorating condition of Gurugram’s sewerage system is no longer being treated as a local civic issue. With the Centre and the Haryana government now directly monitoring the situation, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has been instructed to present a comprehensive ground report on the city’s sewer network and the functioning of its micro sewage treatment plants (STPs).

The move comes as part of the national drive to curb pollution in the Yamuna River. Gurugram’s drainage and sewage management system has been placed under strict surveillance following a high-level review meeting of the Haryana Urban Local Bodies Department. During the meeting, officials were directed to immediately submit detailed data on sewage discharge into stormwater drains and the operational status of all micro STPs.

About five years ago, the MCG spent nearly Rs 75 crore to install 41 micro STPs across parks and residential colonies to treat wastewater for horticulture use. However, more than half of these plants are currently non-functional due to technical failures. The department has now ordered a physical verification of all installations and sought a detailed status report from the corporation.

One of the most serious concerns highlighted during the review was the illegal linking of sewer lines with stormwater drains in several parts of the city. Officials warned that this practice not only accelerates water pollution but also leads to sewage backflow and waterlogging on roads, particularly during the monsoon season.

Six municipal corporations, including Gurugram, Faridabad and Manesar, have been instructed to immediately disconnect all such illegal connections and divert sewage into proper main sewer lines.

Haryana Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh expressed strong displeasure over the mismanagement of micro STPs and sewer infrastructure. He has directed the Pollution Control Board to conduct ground-level inspections of all treatment plants.

The Urban Local Bodies Department further clarified that wastewater management in Haryana is now being monitored at the Union Ministry of Home Affairs level, leaving no room for negligence.

Following the government’s strict directives, the MCG has launched a citywide survey and begun GPS mapping of sewer and drainage intersections. The illegal discharge site identified by GMDA in Sector 42 is being used as a reference case for investigations in other sectors.

Industries across Gurugram have also been warned of heavy penalties if their STPs are found non-operational or if treated wastewater is not reused as mandated.
