Sultanpur National Park is once again echoing with the sounds of migratory birds, with their numbers rising significantly as temperatures drop. While only 10,000-15,000 birds were recorded until mid-November, the count has now increased to an estimated 25,000-35,000, signalling both environmental improvement and the timely arrival of winter.
Recognised as one of Asia’s major bird habitats, the park attracts species from Siberia, Europe, Central Asia and other northern regions. These birds travel thousands of kilometres each year in search of food, water and a safe winter habitat.

According to bird expert SK Bajaj, the delayed onset of winter had kept the numbers low in November, but early December’s dip in temperatures led to a sudden spike in migratory activity. Rare species such as the Greylag Goose, Northern Pintail, Shoveler, Common Teal, Bar-headed Goose, Common Coot, and Black-tailed Godwit are currently visible, enhancing the beauty of the park’s wetlands.
The Wildlife Department has stepped up preparations for the migration season, improving safari tracks and strengthening wetland management. Officials expect the number of birds to rise further during the peak migrant season from mid-December to January. Improved water conditions and strict anti-poaching measures have also contributed to the increase.
With the change in weather, the number of migratory birds is increasing. As the cold sets in, more arrivals begin. Currently, a large number of foreign birds can be seen in Sultanpur National Park,” said Ramkumar Jangra, Divisional Wildlife Officer.
