1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case: Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar was convicted by Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court on Wednesday in a 1984 Anti-Sikh riots case linked with the killing of a father-son duo in the Saraswati Vihar area on November 1, 1984. A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) judge found Kumar, who is currently serving a life sentence in another anti-Sikh riots case in Delhi Cantt, guilty. The Rouse Avenue court has listed the case for arguments on sentence on February 18.
All About Sajjan Kumar's Case
The court framed charges against Sajjan Kumar in connection with the killings of two persons, Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh, during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The case involves tragic events that occurred on November 1, 1984, in Saraswati Vihar, where a mob, allegedly led by Kumar, attacked the victims' home, killing both father and son.
The prosecution claims that the attack was part of a larger campaign of violence targeting the Sikh community in the aftermath of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination.
The court found sufficient evidence to establish a "prima facie" case against Kumar, suggesting that he was not only involved but played a leading role in the violence.
The case, originally registered at the Punjabi Bagh police station, was later transferred to a special investigation team. After a thorough review of the evidence, the court concluded that there were enough grounds to frame charges against Kumar on December 16, 2021. The prosecution has asked the court to permit further arguments on certain essential points for a just resolution of the case.
