Chandigarh Mayor Elections 2024:  The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, both part of the opposition INDIA alliance, will jointly contest the upcoming Chandigarh Mayoral elections. The party in power in Punjab, AAP, is set to fight the post of Mayor whereas, the Congress will fight the remaining two posts, news agency ANI reported, quoting senior Congress leader, Pawan Kumar Bansal.

"Lok Sabha elections are to come later; before that, the corporation elections have come. We have been discussing the same and it has been decided that AAP will contest for the post of mayor and Congress will contest for the post of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. The result of this will be that our candidate from the INDIA bloc will be successful with a good majority," Bansal said.

While touting the collaboration as an attempt to 'save the democracy', he further clarified that both the parties are on the same page on the national issues.

"On national issues, we know that there is agreement between Congress and AAP. Meetings have been held between different parties in which a consensus has been reached. At this time, everyone has gathered together to save the feelings of democracy," he added.

Chandigarh Mayor Elections 2024

The Chandigarh Mayoral elections have a total of 35 councillors, who will vote to elect a Mayor. BJP has the votes of 14 councillors as well as one MP. The Aam Aadmi Party holds 13 seats, while the Congress has 7 seats, and the Shiromani Akali Dal has 1 seat in the current council. To secure a majority, 18 votes are needed, with the BJP having the highest count at 15 votes. However, if the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress collaborate, their combined total would reach 20 votes.

This alliance emerges amidst ongoing discussions between the AAP and Congress about forming a partnership for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Polls. Earlier, a meeting took place in Delhi between Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal.
