Ahmedabad News: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case against an individual over a cryptocurrency scam. According to the information, the accused posed as a representative of a multi-national company's Fraud Department. The accused posed as "James Carlson", to contact a US citizen via phone and claimed that an unauthorised purchase of a computer had been made using the victim's account with his company.
The accused convinced the victim to withdraw cash from their bank accounts and convert it into bitcoin using a RockitCoin ATM wallet. The accused provided a QR code, falsely stating that it was authorised by the US Treasury. Moreover, the accused allegedly deceived the victim by asserting that multiple individuals across four different states had utilised the victim's Social Security number to open accounts with his company.
The accused also sent a fabricated letter dated September 20, 2022, issued by the Federal Trade Commission in the USA, in an attempt to gain the victim's confidence. As a result of these manipulations, the victim allegedly withdrew a total of $130,000 from their bank accounts on various dates between August 30, 2022, and September 9, 2022, depositing these funds into the Bitcoin address provided by the accused.
Searches were conducted at the accused's premises in Ahmedabad, leading to the discovery and confiscation of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, USDT, etc., with a total value of approximately 9.3 lakh USD from the accused's crypto wallets. Incriminating materials were also discovered during these searches.
Additionally, the investigation revealed the involvement of two other individuals, both residents of Ahmedabad. Subsequent searches at their residences yielded mobile phones, laptops containing incriminating evidence, and other materials. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
