Ahmedabad News: A man in Ahmedabad’s Kubernagar area allegedly attacked his wife and mother-in-law with petrol inside a beauty parlour, setting them ablaze on Tuesday evening. Police confirmed that the wife died during treatment, while the mother-in-law sustained 70 per cent burns and is battling for her life at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

The accused has been identified as 35-year-old Ashok Rajput, who married the victim, Jaya, only four months ago. According to officials, Rajput carried petrol to the parlour and confronted Jaya, leading to a heated argument. When her mother Shobhana intervened, he doused both women with petrol and set them on fire.

Bystanders tried to rescue the victims by pouring water to extinguish the flames before rushing them to hospital. Doctors declared that Jaya, 32, could not survive the burns, while Shobhana remains critical under treatment.

Rajput himself suffered burn injuries on his hands and was arrested within hours of the incident. He is currently admitted under police guard at the Civil Hospital.

Investigations have revealed that the couple’s relationship was strained soon after marriage. Jaya, who was divorced earlier, had married Rajput after a relationship, but frequent quarrels followed. Recently, she moved to her mother’s home after another dispute, which reportedly angered Rajput and led to the attack.

According to a Indian Express report, Sardarnagar police have registered a case of murder and attempted murder against Rajput. Officials said CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts will be used to strengthen the case. “The accused deliberately tried to burn the women alive. He is under arrest and further investigation is ongoing,” said a senior officer.
