The India AI Impact Summit 2026 has officially commenced, focusing on the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence across various sectors. During the discussions, experts highlighted how AI could be a definitive solution for reducing road accidents and controlling vehicle emissions in India.

Pankaj Agarwal, an official from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, emphasised that the integration of AI within the road and transport industry holds immense promise. He specifically advocated for the enhancement of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication systems, noting that such technology allows drivers to correct their course before a collision occurs.

Enhancing Road Safety Through Data

During a panel discussion on data-driven solutions for road safety, Agarwal noted that AI can play a critical role in reducing mortality rates on Indian roads.

Addressing Speeding: Data identifies speeding as the primary cause of traffic violations. AI can help gather precise data and provide evidence of such violations without human intervention.

Collision Prevention: By utilising V2V communication, vehicles can "talk" to each other, allowing for real-time adjustments to prevent accidents.

Accurate Record Keeping: AI ensures the maintenance of authentic data regarding accidents and fatalities, which is essential for policy-making.

Regional Concerns And Environmental Impact

The official pointed out significant regional disparities, citing Bihar as an example where the road fatality rate is currently higher than the national average.

Beyond safety, the government is also developing AI-driven tools to combat urban pollution. Agarwal stated that environmental degradation is a major crisis in cities, and the government is stepping up efforts to use AI to monitor emissions accurately, preventing the manipulation of pollution data.

Integrating Driving Into School Curriculum

In a forward-looking suggestion, the Ministry official proposed incorporating vehicle driving into school syllabi through AI-based simulations.

Early Awareness: Introducing these concepts at the school level aims to instill a culture of safe driving among the youth.

Academic Collaboration: IIT Madras is currently working on developing this curriculum to potentially make it a compulsory subject.

Skill Development: By using AI to teach driving in a controlled environment, the younger generation can master safety protocols before ever hitting the road, which is expected to significantly lower future accident rates.
