Tamil Nadu's AIADMK on Monday officially ended its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) just months ahead of the national election. The decision was formally announced by KP Munusamy, the Deputy General Secretary of AIADMK, following unanimous approval of a resolution during a meeting involving MPs, MLAs, and district leaders. The news was met with jubilation as party members at the AIADMK headquarters in Chennai celebrated by lighting fireworks.
"AIADMK unanimously passed a resolution in the meeting. AIADMK is breaking all ties with BJP and NDA alliance from today. The state leadership of the BJP has been continuously making unnecessary remarks about our former leaders, our general secretary EPS and our cadres for the past one year," K P Munusamy, AIADMK Deputy Coordinator said as quoted by news agency ANI.

Last week, the AIADMK-BJP alliance teetered on the edge after D Jayakumar, from the former party, stated, "we will decide on the alliance before the election." He criticized Annamalai, the state BJP chief, stating that he was unfit for the role and often spoke negatively about late leaders, seemingly to promote himself. Annamalai had also previously criticized the late former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, a revered figure within the AIADMK.
The decision to sever ties with the NDA was made during a high-level meeting chaired by AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami at the party headquarters. K P Munusamy, a former Minister and senior leader, briefed reporters on the resolutions, stating that the party had unanimously resolved to part ways with the NDA and form a coalition with like-minded parties for the upcoming elections.
The resolution, without naming anyone, expressed concerns about the recent actions of the BJP's state leadership, including defamatory comments about Dravidian stalwart CN Annadurai and late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, as well as criticism of AIADMK policies. The rift between the two former allies was exacerbated by comments made by BJP state president K Annamalai.
The unanimous decision to break away from the NDA was celebrated with fireworks at the party headquarters, with Munusamy emphasizing that it reflects the sentiments and aspirations of over two crore party workers.
