Following the power shift in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress has received a flurry of resignations from its party members for the past few days. The latest name on the list is Mohammed Ajmal Siddique. The party's minority cell's secretary announced his resignation on Saturday and urged former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to accept the letter.
Siddiqui has resigned from all party posts, citing personal as well as some professional reasons in the letter.
In the letter, Siddiqui said that he has dedicated several years and worked with commitment for the welfare of the party. The leader praised Mamata Banerjee and expressed his delight in working under her leadership over the years. However, after much deliberation, he mentioned that he no longer wishes to be associated with the party.
While citing professional reasons, Siddiqui wrote that the current situation within the party has forced him to resign from the post. He mentioned that over the last few years, many senior leaders have felt ignored, misrepresented, and sidelined in the party.
Further in the letter, Siddiqui mentioned that the party's democratic spirit has weakened lately. The voices of the loyal and grassroots workers have been ignored. The minority cell secretary then directly criticised the methods of Abhishek Banerjee and his behaviour towards other members of the party. "They feel marginalised", Siddique said.
"Centralisation of power and lack of discussion with party workers have made it very difficult for people like me to discharge our responsibilities effectively," added Siddiqui.
"However, due to the circumstances mentioned above, I request you to immediately accept my resignation from the post of State Secretary (Minority Cell), all other posts I hold, and the primary membership of the All India Trinamool Congress. I wish you and the party every success in the future."
The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a stunning two-thirds majority in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election. It crushed the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government, which was in power for the last 15 years. The saffron party won 207 out of 293 seats in Bengal.
Mamata Banerjee lost her Bhabanipur seat, and the Trinamool was reduced to 80 seats amidst an unprecedented anti-incumbency wave. The BJP elected former TMC leader Suvendu Adhikari as the chief minister of the state.
