Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Monday schooled a petitioner for using the casual “yeah” in the Supreme Court. This came while the court was hearing a case wherein the petitioner sought an in-house enquiry against a judge for not granting him relief. Reminding the petitioner of courtroom decorum, the CJI explained how he was “little allergic to people saying Yeah”, a courtroom report with Bar and Bench stated.

“Don’t say ‘yeah’, say ‘yes’. This is not a coffee shop, this is a court,” CJI Chandrachud said.

“I am a little allergic to people saying ‘yeah’,” he further said.

The litigant, a party-in-person, mentioned a petition in which he had added retired Chief Justice of India Justice Ranjan Gogoi as a respondent. He said that the petition was filed in May 2018.

Expressing surprise and dismay at the petition, the CJI told the party, “How can you file a PIL with the judge as a respondent? There has to be some dignity. You cannot just say I want an in-house inquiry against a judge. Justice Ranjan Gogoi was a former judge of the Supreme Court. He retired as the Chief Justice of India. You cannot say I want an in-house inquiry against a judge because you did not succeed before the bench. Sorry, we cannot tolerate this.” The litigant said that Justice Gogoi had wrongfully dismissed his petition, challenging his termination from service, relying on an illegal statement and that there were “gross errors of law” in the judgment.

“Right or wrong, there is a final judgment by the Supreme Court. Your review has been dismissed. Now you have to file a curative, but you say you don’t want to file a curative,” the CJI told him.

Earlier in July, the CJI pulled up a lawyer for turning up in the courtroom without his band. Neckbands and black coats are an essential part of a lawyers' attire. The advocate raised a matter related to a demolition case and said it was "urgent". The Chief Justice of India, however, was unimpressed by his attire.

"Send an email. But where is your band? Is this some fashion parade going on?" CJI asked, as reported by Bar and Bench. When the advocate said he was "in a rush", the CJI replied sternly and said, "Sorry, cannot hear if you are not in proper attire."

In another incident, in an unusual display of dissatisfaction, the CJI issued a stern warning to a lawyer amid a heated discussion on the scheduling of a petition. Justice Chandrachud rebuked the advocate for his manner and cautioned against any attempts to intimidate the court.

The Chief Justice, visibly irritated, intervened in the heated debate, demanding a more respectful and composed approach from the lawyer. "One second, lower your voice. You're arguing before the first court of the Supreme Court of India; lower your pitch, otherwise, I will have you removed from the Court," the CJI rebuked.

CJI further questioned the manners of the advocate by asking him about his places of appearance, "Where do you normally appear? Is this the way you shout at judges every time?"
