Amritsar Temple Attack: The Punjab Police on Monday said an accused responsible for the attack on Thakur Dwara Mandir, was killed in a brief encounter, while another accused managed to escape the scence. The encounter took place near Hotel Radisson, Amritsar, with suspects who threw a hand grenade at a temple.

The DGP Punjab Police released a statement on X, saying "Acting on specific intelligence, Commissionerate Police Amritsar decisively tracked down those responsible for the attack on Thakur Dwara Mandir, #Amritsar, on March 15, 2025. An FIR has been registered at PS Chheharta under the Explosive Substances Act, and intelligence-based efforts led to the identification of the accused."

Police teams tracked the suspects in Rajasansi, the official said, adding the accused opened fire, injuring HC Gurpreet Singh and striking Insp. Amolak Singh’s turban.

Acting in self-defense, the police party fired back, injuring the accused. He was taken to Civil Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The other accused fled, and efforts are on to arrest him. A fresh FIR is being registered at PS Airport. @PunjabPoliceInd is fully committed to maintain peace and harmony in the state," it added.

Police claim Pakistan's involvement

Amritsar Commissioner GPS Bhullar suggested the involvement of Pakistan Intel agency ISI in the blast.

"We got information at 2 am and rushed to the spot right away. A forensic team was called... We checked the CCTV and spoke to the nearby people. The thing is that Pakistan's ISI lures our youth into creating disturbances in Punjab," Commissioner Bhullar said.

Earlier on March 15, two motorcycle-borne masked men were captured on CCTV footage lobbing an object, suspected to be an explosive, at the temple after 12 midnight.

According to eyewitnesses, the two men were seen lobbing a suspicious object towards the temple. No injuries were reported, and police personnel rushed to the site and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Punjab Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said that two suspects have been identified behind the explosion outside Thakurdwara Temple in Amritsar's Khandwala area in the early hours on Saturday.

"There were some miscreants who hurled a grenade at a temple after midnight. There are no injuries or casualties... The situation is under control," Minister Dhaliwal confirmed.

He added that two suspects had been identified and assured the public that authorities were taking swift action. "The police are taking action, they will be caught within a day," the minister said.
