The encounter between security forces and terrorists in the forest area of Gadole in the Kokernag area of Jammu & Kashmir's Anantnag district entered its fifth day on Sunday. What was initially believed to be 'two-three engaging security forces' has claimed the lives of three police and Army officers so far. Drones have been pressed into service to assist the personnel present on the ground. Meanwhile, a top Army official visited the site of the encounter on Saturday.

1. Drones and quadcopters have been deployed by security forces to track the hidden terrorists and target suspected terrorist hideouts, the Army informed. "Drones used extension for carrying out surveillance and other operations at the Kokernag encounter site in Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces have been carrying out operations against a group of terrorists in the area for the last three days," security officials were quoted as saying by news agency ANI on Saturday.

2. Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi was briefed by the ground commander of the ongoing operation in Kokernag. "Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi today reviewed the operational situation on the ongoing operations at Kokernag forest area in Anantnag," the Army said in a statement.

"He was briefed by the ground commanders on the High-Intensity Operations in which Hi-tech Equipment is being used for surveillance and delivery of firepower along with the high impact of precision fire being used by the forces," it added.
3. Security forces are using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to target those areas in the forest where they suspect terrorists are hiding.

4. Colonel Manpreet Singh, commander of a Rashtriya Rifles Unit, Major Ashish Dhonak of the Indian Army, and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Humayun Bhat were killed in a gunfight with the terrorists on Wednesday.
5. The terrorists are hiding in a cave atop a hill in the forest area. The vantage point is helping the terrorists prolong the armed confrontation.
6. According to reports, the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty were killed while forces attempted to ascend the hill in order to launch an attack on the terrorists.
