Assam Beef Ban: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that beef will not be served in any restaurant or hotel, and it will not be served in any public function or public place. He said that from today, the consumption of beef in hotels, restaurants, and public places has been totally stopped.

The senior BJP leader, Sarma, also said that earlier the decision was to stop eating beef near the temples. But, from now on, it has been expanded to the entire state that beef won't be available to eat in any community place, public place, hotel, or restaurant.

"...In Assam, we have decided that beef will not be served in any restaurant or hotel and also it will not be served in any public function or public place, so from today we have completely decided to stop the consumption of beef in hotels, restaurants and public places. Earlier our decision was to stop eating beef near temples but now we have expanded it to the entire state that you will not be able to eat it in any community place, public place, hotel or restaurant...," Sarma said as quoted by news agency ANI.

Soon after the announcement, Assam minister Pijush Hazarika retweeted the CM’s announcement and challenged the opposition Congress, saying, “I challenge Assam Congress to welcome the beef ban or go and settle in Pakistan.”

The recent decision comes after Assam CM earlier hinted at implementing such a ban. Last week, Sarma had said that he was open to prohibiting beef consumption in Assam if the Congress submitted a written request.

Meanwhile, AIUDF MLA and Party General Secretary, Dr (Hafiz) Rafiqul Islam said, "The cabinet should not be deciding on what will people eat or wear.
