Babri Masjid Demolition: December 6 marks the 31st anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition, the infamous incident was carried out on this day in 1992 by Kar Sevaks. The demolition led to communal violence in several parts of the country leading to the death of over 2,000 people.
Over three decades have passed, yet the demolition of Babri Masjid is considered one of the dark days in India's history after its Independence. The particular incident led to several changes in the country including dynamics of religions to politics.
What Happened On This Day?
On December 6, 1992, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) organised a rally near the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya where they claimed that the said masjid was the birthplace of Lord Ram. However, the rally turned violent and gradually it demolished the Babri Masjid. Following the demolition, riots ignited across the country and several hundred were killed while thousands were injured and displaced.
What Is The Case and Where It All Began?
The dispute revolves around the plot of land measuring 2.77 acres in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya, which the Hindus claim is the birthplace of Lord Ram while the Muslims say that it houses the Babri mosque. The Hindu community claimed that Mughal emperor Babur demolished the temple of Lord Rama and built the Babri mosque in 1528.
Later in the year, 1885, a petition by Nirmohi Akhara was filed which sought permission to worship Lord Ram inside the Babri Masjid. However, permission was not granted. Later, in the year 1949, some Hindu groups allegedly entered the mosque and placed Lord Ram's idols inside and it was declared the area was disputed.
In 1986, a district court ordered to opening of the gates of the mosque and allowed Hindus to worship there. However, it didn't mix well with Muslims and a Babri Mosque Action Committee was formed.
In 1992, the mosque was demolished by Hindu Kar Sevaks, leading to widespread riots in India that claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people.
Many politicians, including LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti, were accused of inciting the mob on that day. However, all accused in the case were acquitted by the Special CBI court in Lucknow.
Historic SC Verdict: The Day A Side Won
In a historic judgement, in the year 2019, a five-judge Constitution Bench -- headed by Chief Justice Ranjan gave a historic verdict and paved the way for the construction of Lord Ram's temple. The top court also allotted an alternative land to be given to the Muslims for the construction of the mosque.
