- Bankipur is one of Bihar’s most important urban constituencies and has traditionally been considered a BJP stronghold
Digital Desk, Patna: The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced Abhishek Sinha, popularly known as ‘Bunty’, as its candidate for the Bankipur Assembly by-election. The BJP on Tuesday declared Abhishek Kumar, a close associate of BJP chief Nitin Nabin, as its official candidate for the by-election in Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly constituency.
The announcement was made through a statement issued by BJP national general secretary and headquarters in-charge Arun Singh. The party’s Central Election Committee approved his candidature and formally declared his name.
Several prominent and senior leaders were being considered for the ticket, but the party eventually chose a young leader from within its organisational structure. The decision has raised a key political question: why did the BJP choose Abhishek Bunty for the Bankipur contest?
Why did BJP pick Abhishek Sinha as its Bankipur candidate?
Abhishek Kumar has been associated with the BJP organisation for a long time and has served as the vice-president of the BJP Yuva Morcha in the Bankipur region. His long-standing involvement with party activities is considered one of the major factors behind his selection.
According to political experts, they believe that caste equations also played an important role in the BJP’s decision. Abhishek Sinha belongs to the Kayastha community, which has a massive presence in the Bankipur constituency. Kayastha voters are estimated to account for around 14 per cent of the electorate in Bankipur. Yadav voters make up around 12 per cent, while Muslims constitute approximately 9 per cent of the voter base.
By selecting Abhishek Sinha as the candidate, the BJP appears to be aiming to strengthen its traditional social support base in the constituency while maintaining its organisational strategy.
Moreover, the BJP’s decision is being viewed as a message to dedicated party workers. Instead of selecting someone from a major political family or choosing a well-known face, the party has given a ticket to a worker who has been active in the organisation for a long time. With this move, the BJP is trying to signal that hard work and loyalty towards the organisation are valued.
Kumar is regarded as one of the close associates of BJP National President Nitin Nabin, who vacated this seat after being elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Why does Bankipur matter for BJP?
Bankipur is one of Bihar’s most important urban constituencies and has traditionally been considered a BJP stronghold. The seat holds strategic importance for the party, making the by-election a closely watched political contest.
With its candidate now announced, the BJP is expected to intensify its campaign in the constituency. The party is likely to highlight the achievements of the Central and Bihar governments while relying on its strong organisational network in the region.
Who are the candidates in the Bankipur bypoll?
The Bankipur Assembly seat became vacant after BJP national president Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha. Following the Election Commission’s notification, the nomination process for the by-election has begun.
The Jan Suraaj Party has fielded its founder Prashant Kishor, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has nominated Rekha Gupta. With Abhishek Kumar entering the race, the contest is expected to get tough. The presence of three major candidates has turned the Bankipur by-election into one of the most discussed political contests in Bihar.
The by-election will be held on July 30 along with two other bypolls in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The counting of votes will take place on August 3.
