Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose Resigns Ahead Of Assembly Elections; LG Kavinder Gupta Steps Down In Ladakh

In a major development, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose and Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta have resigned from their respective offices. The move comes ahead of the Assembly elections in the states.

Bose sent his resignation to President Murmu, as confirmed by his Officer on Special Duty (OSD). After tendering his resignation, Bose told news agency PTI, "I have spent enough time at the Governor's office." Bose served the office for three and a half years, while Gupta was in office for just nine months. 

What's brewing in Bengal politics ahead of election?

Bose, currently on a visit to Delhi, sent his resignation directly to the Rashtrapati Bhavan. This dramatic resignation has sparked speculation in political circles from Bengal to Delhi.

CV Anand Bose assumed office as Governor of Bengal on November 17, 2022. His term was scheduled to last until November 2027, but he resigned nearly 20 months ahead of schedule. The real reasons behind this sudden decision remain unclear.

According to the information, the central government has also made alternative arrangements as soon as Bose left office. There are reports that Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi will be appointed as the interim Governor of Bengal.

He will assume charge of the Raj Bhavan in addition to his current responsibilities. Ravi is a former Indian Police Service officer and has also held important positions in the Intelligence Bureau of the Government of India. Bose's tenure was marked by frequent sharp confrontations with the Mamata Banerjee government. He was vocal in his criticism of the state government on numerous administrative and policy issues. Political experts believe that his sudden resignation in Delhi just before the elections could be part of a larger political strategy.

Mamata slams Centre

Expressing deep displeasure over Bose's resignation, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the central government. She alleged the resignation was due to pressure from the Union Home Ministry in view of the upcoming assembly elections.

Mamata Banerjee also strongly objected to the alleged appointment of RN Ravi as the interim Governor, stating that she was not consulted in this important decision, disregarding established traditions.

Terming it as a murder of 'cooperative federalism' and a violation of democratic norms, the CM Mamata said that such unilateral decisions by the center are weakening the foundation of the country's federal structure.
