Bengal News: A second-year Electrical Engineering student from IIT Kharagpur died on July 21 after reportedly choking on a tablet taken for a mild cough. The student, identified as Chandradeep Pawar, collapsed shortly after taking the medicine and was rushed to the campus hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The incident took place on Sunday night after dinner. According to reports, Chandradeep had consumed a tablet prescribed by a doctor. The medicine got stuck in his airway, leading to breathing difficulties. His friends and roommate immediately took him to the B.C. Roy Hospital on campus.

His father, Jairam Pawar, shared that he had spoken to his son earlier in the evening. “He told me he took medicine for a slight cough around 6 PM. We spoke again at 9 PM and everything seemed fine,” he said. The family was informed around 11 pm that he had been admitted to the hospital.

The medical bulletin from B.C. Roy Hospital stated that Chandradeep was brought in at 10:20 PM with complaints of sudden shortness of breath after taking a tablet. He collapsed on the way to the hospital. When examined, he had no pulse, his blood pressure was unrecordable and his body showed signs of cyanosis.

According to a Indian Express report, Doctors immediately started CPR and administered emergency medication. An endotracheal tube was inserted and a piece of the tablet was removed from his bronchus. Despite efforts by the on-duty doctor and three senior doctors, he could not be revived. ECG confirmed complete cardiac arrest. He was declared dead at 11:05 PM.
