Bengal Policeman Robbery Video:  A West Bengal cop's heroic act helped foil a Rs 4 crore robbery at a jewellery shop in the state's Raniganj last week. The policeman, identified as Sub-Inspector Meghnad Mondal, could be seen exchanging over 20 rounds of fire with as many as seven armed robbers, who were firing country-made arms at him. The brave officer, despite being significantly outnumbered, kept the robbers engaged, using an electric pole as a shield.

The West Bengal police shared the CCTV footage of the incident while writing a full-fledged account of the encounter on its official X account. The incident took place on Sunday evening when seven robbers, armed with a rifle and several pistols, entered a prominent jewellery shop in the Tarbangla area of Raniganj police station. The shocking entry of the robbers took the customers and the shop owner aback. Within no time, the miscreants robbed jewels worth over Rs 4 crores.

Mondal, who was in the vicinity for his personal work, was in plain clothes but carrying his service revolver with him. As there were suspicious movements near the jewellery shop, the cop noticed and pulled out his gun. Soon after, the first robber, who was guarding the gate, alerted the others and engaged the cop. Mondal, who had by then taken a position behind an electric pole, unlocked his gun and opened fire at him.

For the next few seconds, the fearless Bengal cop faced a volley of bullets and befittingly returned fire while taking cover behind the pole. The video showed a bullet hitting a robber, who fell to the ground, injured. After a brief exchange of fire, the robbers ran away on their motorcycles but left behind half the loot.

Meanwhile, Mondal alerted the department, which arrested one of the robbers. The search for others is currently underway.

On their way, the robbers fired at a driver and hijacked his car, injuring him and a pedestrian. However, thanks to Mondal's swift action and the alertness of the Bengal and Jharkhand Police, one of the accused, Suraj Singh, was arrested. The next day, another robber, Sonu Singh, was also taken into custody.

The incident shot Meghnad Mondal, an ordinary cop yesterday, to prominence overnight. The West Bengal police said that when people asked Mondal to narrate the story of his bravery, his reply was simply, "I did my duty."
