The incident reportedly took place near the Ashoka Pillar while the vehicle was transporting cash from a bank branch in JP Nagar. According to preliminary investigations, a group of men arrived in a car displaying a Government of India sticker and stopped the cash van, claiming they were there to verify documents.

The suspects then forced the staff inside the van into their vehicle along with the cash and drove toward Dairy Circle, where they released the employees before speeding away with the money.

Commenting on the incident on Thursday, Karnataka Home Minister H Parameshwara said, “something like this has never happened in Bengaluru before.”

“The accused were given information about depositing money in ATMs. We have just gotten a lead about whether anyone was among those depositing money," the minister added.

Police have launched an investigation, examining over 50 CCTV footages to trace the vehicles’ route and identify those involved.

City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh stated that the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon. While approximately Rs 7 crore were reportedly stolen, authorities said the amount is yet to be verified as the transport driver did not provide accurate details.

An FIR has been filed following complaints from the Branch Manager of CMS Inno System Ltd, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

According to the FIR, the company vehicle left for the bank around 9:30 am. At approximately 12:24 pm, it withdrew Rs 7.11 crore from the JP Nagar HDFC Currency Chest and loaded it into the vehicle.

Later, the driver reported that while heading toward Lalbagh Siddapura Gate, an SUV intercepted the vehicle. Around six men got out and claimed to be RBI officials.

They took custodian Afthab and two armed guards, Rajanna and Tammayya, into their car and instructed the driver to continue driving, the FIR stated. The men then intimidated the driver, stole the entire Rs 7.11 crore, and fled the scene.
