Bengaluru News: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Saturday announced that the Karnataka government is planning to introduce a new law to ban basement parking in buildings and apartments situated in low-lying parts of Bengaluru. The move comes in response to frequent flooding in these areas during the monsoon season.

According to The Hindu, Shivakumar addressed the issue after holding a meeting with city MLAs and senior officials. He said that basement parking significantly contributes to waterlogging in flood-prone zones. “We are drafting a new law to stop basement parking in low-lying areas of Bengaluru to help reduce monsoon-related flooding,” he said.

The Deputy CM also announced compensation for those impacted by the recent heavy rains. Each household affected by waterlogging will receive Rs 10,000 as relief. In the case of rain-related deaths, the government has approved a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the victims.

Shivakumar also addressed concerns over abandoned vehicles left on city roads. Bengaluru Police will soon begin towing vehicles that are parked for more than 21 days. These will be treated as abandoned and can be auctioned. A 100-acre land parcel has been allocated to create a dumping yard for these vehicles.

Regarding footpath vendors, the government has identified 27,665 hawkers across the city. Of these, 3,775 vendors will initially be provided with push carts or four-wheel trolleys. These will be used in designated vending zones, and vendors will be required to take them home after business hours. Shivakumar said the eviction process of unauthorised vendors will take place in a phased manner, despite political pressure.
