Bengaluru:  In a bid to boost infrastructure and address the anticipated surge in traffic, the Karnataka government is actively exploring the possibility of a second airport in the city. State Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister, MB Patil, has shortlisted three possible sites along with the Airports Authority of India and is preparing to meet the Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu to take the proposal forward.

As the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru nears full capacity, Karnataka is advocating for a second airport. Minister Patil is planning to meet Rammohan Naidu soon and discuss the plan, Times of India reported.

Bengaluru: THESE Sites Were Shortlisted For Second Airport

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has shortlisted three sites from the original list of seven sites for the second airport in the city. The three finalists are Kaggalipura, Harohalli and Chikkasolur, the former two being on Kanakpura Road and the last coming along the Nelamangala–Kunigal road. In view of boosting connectivity, all three sites are between 25-45 km from Bengaluru’s city centre. The officials inspected the site back in April, but the final report is still awaited.

According to the report, Karnataka has already submitted a formal proposal to the Centre, demanding 4,500 acres of land for the construction of the airport. However, not everyone is convinced by the proposed sites, and an aviation analyst argued for the airport to be built between Bengaluru and Mysuru, citing better connectivity.

Karnataka’s plan of building an airport could likely be hindered by Tamil Nadu, which is planning to construct an international airport in Hosur, just 150 km away from Kempegowda International Airport. Land acquisition for airport development can also be a challenge for Karnataka, further delaying the construction.
