Bengaluru Sextortion Case: A sextortion case was reported in Bengaluru, in which the victim was a Sri Lankan national. The victim, who is a student, met an unknown person on Instagram and later developed an online friendship, NDTV reported. The 24-year-old Lankan student was contacted on WhatsApp after their friendship grew on Instagram.

As the accused won his confidence, they started a conversation on video calls. The Lankan student in his police complaint claimed that during the video calls, his personal photos and private videos were taken secretly without his consent. After taking his private videos, the accused started demanding money in exchange for deleting the digital content.

Lankan Student Threatened

First, the student attempted to ignore the accused's demand, but when the individual threatened to share those clips and pictures with his friends and family members, he agreed to pay to delete them.

The victim paid the accused Rs 36,000. However, the accused kept threatening him by uploading the videos on social media. The fraudulent person again demanded additional money. Finding himself in a deep trap, he decided to take help from the police.

The police filed a case on the complaint of the Lankan student and launched an enquiry into the case. The student, in his complaint, said that he was subjected to mental harassment and threatened by his alleged online friends.

Meanwhile, the government runs several initiatives to spread awareness about cybercrimes, ranging from digital arrest to sextortion. The government advertisements always appeal to social media users not to trust online friends if you don't know them personally.
