Bengaluru Stampede Update: The Karnataka government has approached the Karnataka High Court a day after the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) issued an order, quashing the suspension of the IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash, who was suspended as part of a punitive measure taken after the Bengaluru stampede last month.
The state government had suspended Vikash, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and senior police officer Shekar H Tekkannavar on June 5, a day after a deadly stampede occurred at Chinnaswamy stadium, claiming several lives.
The central tribunal revoked the suspension of Vikash after he had approached the central tribunal following his suspension on June 5. Vikash Kumar was the Inspector General and Additional Commissioner of Police, West, Bengaluru and was appointed as the in-charge of the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium.
Bengaluru Stampede: CAT Said Police Are Not God Or Magician
The CAT, which revoked the suspension of the officer on Tuesday, said that the police are neither ‘God’ nor ‘magician’ to handle such a huge crowd on short notice, while he held RCB responsible for the stampede. "Police personnel are also human beings. They are neither 'God' nor magicians. They do not have the magic powers like 'Alladin ka Chirag' (Alladin's lamp) that they can fulfil any wish by rubbing a finger," CAT order read.
"The RCB did not take the appropriate permission or consent from the police. Suddenly, they posted on social media platforms, and as a result of the aforesaid information, the public gathered. Because of a shortage of time, the police were unable to make the appropriate arrangements. It cannot be expected from the police that within a short time of about 12 hours, the police will make all the required arrangements," the order read.
Stampede Occurred During RCB's Victory Celebration
In a stampede that occurred on June 4 after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) announced a victory parade to celebrate RCB’s first IPL victory trophy, 11 people were killed while several others suffered injuries.
