Bengaluru authorities have fined over 22 families for wasting drinking water amid a serious crisis. This came two weeks after the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) warned locals against the use of drinking water for non-essential purposes.
A fine of Rs 5,000 has been unleashed on each family after they were reported wasting the drinking water for non-essential purposes like washing cars and gardening, Deccan Herald reported.
The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) said it has collected ₹ 1.1 lakh in fines from the 22 households.
As per officials, most of the complaints in this regard came on social media. The board has also established a call centre to report misuse of water.
Experts said the drying of lakes was the major reason for the rapid depletion of groundwater. The water board is now planning to put treated water into the lakes.
Bengaluru is reeling under an unprecedented water crisis. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah admitted the city was facing a dearth of over 500 million litres of water every day. “The city needs 2,600 MLD of water, of which 1,450 MLD is coming from the Cauvery and 650 MLD from the underground water table through borewells. There is a shortage of 500 MLD,” he said.
The state government has been implementing several measures to curb the water crisis in India’s Silicon Valley. A task force has been formed to promptly address complaints. The government is also planning to drill borewells at 313 locations and revive 1,200 inactive ones.
The chief minister has instructed officials to utilize all available private tankers, including those from the Karnataka Milk Federation, to provide water to slums, upland areas, villages, and borewell-dependent regions.
