Bengaluru Rains: The District Collector declared a holiday for all schools and Anganwadis in Bengaluru on Monday, October 21 due to ongoing heavy rains across the city. This precautionary decision was made to ensure the safety of students and staff as the city experiences significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions. However, the order does not apply to degree courses, post-graduate programs, diplomas, engineering and ITI institutions, which will continue as usual.

The announcement, made verbally due to the urgency of the situation, will be followed by an official order soon, news agency ANI reported. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted more rain and thunderstorms throughout the day, contributing to the decision to suspend classes.

The IMD also issued a weather warning for Karnataka and coastal India, attributing the rains to a cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal. Heavy rainfall is expected in South Interior Karnataka, Andaman and Nicobar, Gujarat, Konkan, Goa and Kerala, among others.

The latest updates from IMD reported the presence of an upper cyclonic circulation over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh. This system extends up to 5.8 km above sea level and is observed to tilt southwestward. The heavy rains are expected to continue through the day, with disruptions likely to persist.

Bengaluru Traffic Advisory

In response to the rains, the Bengaluru Traffic Police issued advisories urging commuters to avoid areas affected by waterlogging. Key routes, including the CID Office, Palace Road and Bannerghatta Road, have reported slow-moving traffic. Particularly affected are the Panathur Railway Underpass and Varthur Gunjur Road, where waterlogged roads have caused severe traffic congestion. Commuters are advised to use alternate routes and cooperate with traffic authorities.
