Bengaluru experienced steady rainfall on Monday, with residents donning raincoats and jackets to cope with the weather. While the rain wasn’t torrential, it caused notable disruptions, including six incidents of tree falls and waterlogging on several key roads, leading to heavy traffic congestion.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the rain to an upper air circulation over the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka coasts, clarifying it wasn’t directly linked to Cyclone Fengal. Despite this, Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka are expected to experience light to moderate rain for the next two days. Bengaluru recorded 33.7 mm of rainfall by Monday night, while HAL Airport noted 27.4 mm.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) MN Anucheth reported waterlogging in areas like Kasturinagar and Bannerghatta Road but described the situation as manageable. Commuting was particularly challenging, with many companies advising employees to work from home. Commuters struggled to secure rides, with significant fare surges reported.
Meanwhile, a 50-year-old mud house collapsed due to the rains in Padarayanapura on Saturday night, causing minor injuries to an elderly couple, who were later shifted to a relief centre.
Cyclone Fengal Update
Cyclone Fengal, which had earlier brought torrential rain to various districts, is expected to weaken by Tuesday, December 3. However, heavy rainfall is still predicted in 15 districts of Tamil Nadu including Nilgiris, Krishnagiri, Tiruppur, Erode, Theni, and Madurai, prompting a yellow alert from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai.
