Bengaluru’s long-awaited 10.8 km Major Arterial Road (MAR) is set to open within the next two months, providing seamless connectivity between South and West Bengaluru. According to a Times of India report, The new road is expected to drastically reduce travel time from 1.5 hours to just 10 minutes, offering commuters a toll-free alternative to the NICE Road corridor.
The 10-lane stretch runs from Challaghatta (near the Namma Metro depot) on Mysuru Road to Kadabagere Cross on Magadi Road. This strategic route enhances access to Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout (NPKL) and passes through several key villages, including Kambipura, K Krishna Sagara, Bheemanakuppe, Kommaghatta, Kenchanapura, and Sulikere.
Project Cost and Challenges
Initially budgeted at Rs 465 crore, the project cost has now escalated to Rs 585 crore. The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has successfully acquired 321.1 acres for construction. However, some challenges remain, including:
- Pending forest clearance for diverting 2 acres in the Sulikere reserve forest.
- Railway underpass construction still underway.
- 300 meters of pending roadwork near Mysuru Road, awaiting completion of the Challaghatta Metro depot.
Completion Timeline
Originally planned in 2011, the project faced multiple delays, with tenders issued in 2017 and construction starting in 2018. Though the initial deadline was August 2019, officials now confirm that the road is finally nearing completion.
A BDA official stated, “We are addressing the final challenges, and the road should be ready within the next two months.”
Once operational, this high-speed, toll-free corridor will significantly ease congestion, benefiting thousands of daily commuters across Bengaluru.
