Bengaluru gets a sigh of relief as the Karnataka government has allocated Rs 400 crore for upgrading the 22.7 km stretch of the Outer Ring Road (ORR), a key hub for multinational companies (MNCs) and start-ups. The allocation will address the frequent civic and infrastructure challenges in the area, as per a report by the Deccan Herald.
Dr. Harish Kumar K, Special Commissioner (Finance), said the project strives to make ORR a world-class standard road through collaboration with the Karnataka Government and the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL).
Reportedly, the initiative to overhaul ORR is part of a broader set of development projects announced in the budget.
BBMP approves 1,000 km footpath
Meanwhile, giving preference to pedestrian safety, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the civic body governing the Bengaluru metropolitan area, has committed to constructing 1,000 km of footpaths.
These footpaths will be integrated into arterial and sub-arterial road projects currently underway and incorporated into all future road developments.
Moreover, the budget also reaffirmed a commitment to support two major ongoing infrastructure efforts — the Rs 1,700 crore white-topping of 157 kilometres of roads and of 118 roads at a cost of Rs 694 crore.

Among other major announcements, BBMP has earmarked Rs 2.5 crore per ward in the metropolis for capital works and Rs 50 lakh per ward for maintenance. This integrates into a total allocation of Rs 675 crore across 225 wards.
BBMP allocates for railway infra projects
BBMP has also set eyes on developing new railway infrastructure projects. This includes a railway over-bridge at 1st Main Road in Kengeri, an under-bridge near Ramohalli Gate. Both projects would be completed with an amount of Rs 20 crore.
The BBMP also hinted towards addressing unmanned crossing issue. The metropolitan area has over two dozen manned railway crossing, however, no concrete effort has been made to systematically eliminate them by constructing railway overpasses. The BBMP has addressed this gap in infrastructure planning.
