The political slugfest between Trinamool Congress and the BJP intensified on Friday moments after an earthquake of 5.5 magnitude jolted Kolkata. While the earthquake was indeed the immediate issue that was raked, the barb against each other was on the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR).

It all started moments after the West Bengal BJP, in a post on X, took a jibe at the TMC. The post read, "West Bengal just felt earthquake tremors. CM Mamata Banerjee, was it because of SIR?"

The TMC replied to the post by the official X handle, giving a sarcastic rebuttal. The ruling party said, "It’s actually the ground shaking beneath the feet of the West Bengal BJP as they stare at an imminent defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections."

Taking a jibe at the BJP's top leadership, the post further added, "And don't worry, the Delhi Zamindars won’t miss it either; the shockwaves will reach them too."

The Bengal SIR has triggered an intense war of words between the two parties. Earlier on Thursday, Mamata Banerjee wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, urging him to halt the SIR exercise, citing alleged deaths, administrative distress, and serious procedural flaws.

She warned that the process, if continued, without correction could have "irreversible consequences" for officials and citizens. The BJP reacted to the letter, accusing Mamata of attempting to obstruct the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls for political gain.

BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said, "Mamata Banerjee seeks to win the West Bengal elections through her illegal vote bank."

"The Congress Party, RJD, and all opposition parties attempted the same when SIR was being conducted in Bihar. It should be noted that the Supreme Court did not stop the SIR," he added.
