The BJP on Wednesday released a list of five candidates for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha polls. The saffron party has decided to send L Murugan, Umesh Nath Maharaj, Maya Naroliya, Bansilal Gurjar to the upper house from Madhya Pradesh.    

Besides, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will be sent to the Rajya Sabha from Odisha.

Five Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh are falling vacant on April 2. Election for these seats will be held on February 27. The last date to submit the nomination form is February 15.

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday morning extended its support to BJP candidate Vaishnaw. “Biju Janata Dal will support the candidature of Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon'ble Union Minister, Railways, Communication and Information and Technology for the larger interest of State's Railways and Telecom Development in the ensuing Election to Rajya Sabha - 2024,” the press release read.

On Sunday, BJP had named 14 candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls, including former Union minister R P N Singh and Sudhanshu Trivedi - the only outgoing MP renominated by the party so far.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will today file her nomination for Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. She has reached Jaipur.

Gandhi, who was Congress president for almost 22 years between 1998 and 2022, is a five-time Lok Sabha MP. According to sources, her son Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will accompany her when she files her nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections in Jaipur.   

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was last elected to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, will retire in April this year.

The Election Commission last month declared the schedule for the biennial poll for 56 Rajya Sabha seats. Voting will take place on February 27.
