BRICS Summit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a four-day visit to South Africa and Greece on Tuesday. In South Africa, PM Modi will attend the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24 at the invitation of President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa.

- Leaders of the BRICS group Brazil, Russia, India China South Africa are expected to attend the first in-person summit since 2019.

- BRICS is represented by the five major emerging nations in the world that account for 16 per cent of global trade, 24 per cent of the global GDP, and 41 per cent of the world's population.

- The BRICS has been actively promoting a robust agenda for collaboration across all sectors and acts as a forum for discussion of problems important to the whole Global South, PM Modi said.

- "During my stay in Johannesburg, I will also participate in BRICS–Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue event that will be held as part of the BRICS Summit activities. I look forward to interacting with a number of guest countries that have been invited to participate in this event," PMO said in a statement.

- PM Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with some of the Leaders present in Johannesburg.

- After concluding a two-day visit in South Africa, the prime minister will travel to Athens in Greece on 25 August 2023 at the invitation of H E Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece. 

BRICS Expansion

The leaders are divided over the expansion of the BRICS by adding new members, including the admission criteria. According to South Africa, more than 40 nations, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Indonesia, Egypt, and Ethiopia, have expressed interest in joining the BRICS.
