Rajasthan: What was supposed to be the beginning of a happy married life turned into a nightmare for a man in Rajasthan, when his newlywed bride jumped off from the balcony just two days after their wedding after a dark secret came to light. The bride, who had allegedly tied the knot under false pretences, not only landed with fractured legs but also in the custody of the police. This shocking incident has now uncovered a larger inter-state marriage scam that preys on unsuspecting grooms.
The bizarre episode took place in the Banad police station area of Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The groom, Bharat, had long been seeking a suitable match but hadn’t been successful. That’s when an acquaintance of his father, Nandkishore Soni, offered to help. Nandkishore introduced Bharat to a 23-year-old woman named Suman Pandey, who was presented as a decent, eligible girl from Bihar. What seemed like a well-arranged match came with a price tag Bharat’s family was allegedly made to pay Rs 3 lakh, of which Rs 1.7 lakh was paid in cash and Rs 1.3 lakh was transferred online to middlemen who helped finalise the arrangement.
A Shocking Revelation On Wedding Night
Initially, the marriage took place smoothly. However, just two days later, things took a shocking turn.
According to police officials, Bharat found out that Suman had been hiding a crucial detail about her past, she was already married. Even more startling was that she had used forged identity documents to declare herself single at the time of the temple wedding. An intense argument reportedly broke out between the couple on the night the truth was uncovered.
In an attempt to escape the situation, Suman allegedly locked Bharat in a room and tied her saree into a makeshift rope, intending to climb down from the balcony where two men identified as Sandeep and Ravi were waiting to receive her and help her flee. But her daring escape plan went horribly wrong. As she began descending, the saree rope either snapped or slipped from her grip, causing her to plummet down and suffer serious injuries, including fractures to both her legs.
Her loud screams caught the attention of Bharat’s family members, who rushed to the spot. While Suman was injured and caught, her accomplices managed to flee the scene. She was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. However, police say that even while undergoing medical care, she continued to mislead investigators about her background and intentions.
It was only during extended interrogation that the truth began to unravel. Under pressure, Suman broke down and confessed to being part of a larger scam. Authorities now believe that she, along with several other individuals, was involved in a criminal network that specialised in orchestrating fake marriages to extract money from vulnerable men.

According to police sources, the group involved includes Sandeep Sharma from Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh, Ravi and Ruby Devi from Bihar, and Nandkishore and Jitendra Soni from Jodhpur. Together, they allegedly operated a well-organised gang targeting bachelors desperate to get married. Once the marriage was arranged and money exchanged hands, the brides would disappear within days, leaving the grooms duped and humiliated.
An FIR has been filed in the matter, and law enforcement has launched a full-scale search for the absconding members of the gang. Police believe that this case may only be the tip of the iceberg, and that the gang could have scammed several more men across state lines using similar methods.
