BSNL D2D Service: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced BSNL's new Direct-to-Device (D2D) service, enabling users to make calls, send messages and conduct UPI payments in remote locations without relying on traditional telecom networks. This service represents India's first indigenous satellite communication technology of its kind.
In addition to BSNL, other telecom companies are also exploring similar solutions. Notably, Elon Musk's Starlink and Amazon's Kuiper project are preparing to launch satellite internet services as well.
How BSNL's Satellite Direct-to-Device Service Works
The DoT revealed the details of BSNL’s satellite-to-device service via X (formerly Twitter), highlighting its capability to connect users in hard-to-reach areas without interruptions. This initiative is a collaboration between BSNL and Viasat, an American internet service provider. During the recent India Mobile Congress (IMC), Viasat and BSNL successfully showcased two-way messaging and SOS messaging using a specially designed Android device.
Benefits of the New Service
With the introduction of the satellite direct-to-device service, users will no longer need to rely on mobile tower networks. In areas lacking network coverage, this service will enable users to make voice calls, send messages and even use UPI for transactions. This innovation aims to eliminate the dependence on mobile towers, particularly in isolated regions.
Availability And Cost Concerns
Currently, there is no information on when the general public will have access to this service or its pricing structure. Preliminary reports suggest that setting up the necessary equipment could be expensive and complex for everyday users. Additionally, adverse weather conditions may disrupt signals. BSNL has indicated that this service could be vital in emergencies, allowing users to contact someone or make payments where conventional networks are unavailable.

Competition From Global Players
Elon Musk's Starlink is also gearing up to introduce its satellite service in India. Recent updates indicate that Starlink has agreed to comply with India’s security and privacy regulations, paving the way for its entry into the market. Similarly, Amazon’s Kuiper project is expected to launch soon, although specific timelines for both companies remain unclear.
