A medical practitioner filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, seeking the court’s intervention in ensuring proper administrative measures to control the rising number of dengue cases in West Bengal.

Dr Sanjib Kumar Mukhopadhyay, the petitioner, has alleged that the state government and local authorities have failed miserably in controlling the spread of the disease, which has claimed several lives and affected thousands of people in West Bengal.

The petitioner has sought the intervention of the Calcutta High Court in ensuring rapid blood tests for dengue and fixing the responsibilities of the authorities concerned in the matter. The matter will be heard by the division bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya this week.

The petition stated that the common people are suffering in the midst of a tussle between the Union and the state governments and that there are severe shortages of blood platelets in different state-run hospitals, making the situation even more critical.
