Saima Wazed, the daughter of Bangladesh’s former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, expressed anguish for not being able to see her mother amid political unrest in the country. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, “Heartbroken with the loss of life in my country that I love. So heartbroken that I cannot see and hug my mother during this difficult time.”

Hasina, who is believed to be living in Delhi currently, fled from Dhaka on Monday after widespread protests demanding her resignation from the prime minister’s post. Her daughter Wazed also lives in the national capital.

Wazed is the World Health Organization’s regional director for Southeast Asia. This comes amid turmoil in Bangladesh as protests began initially with the demand to end a quota system that reserved 30 per cent of government jobs for families of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's 1971 War of independence before turning into anti-government demonstrations.

Sheikh Hasina, who fled Dhaka following violent protests in her country, landed at Hindan Air Base around 5:45 PM on Monday and she was greeted by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval who held an hour-long meeting with her about the current situation in Bangladesh and her future course of action also came up for discussion.

Following Hasina’s resignation and departure from Dhaka, hundreds of thousands of protesters defied the curfew, marched the capital's streets and later stormed the Prime Minister's palace. Several videos surfaced on social media showing crowds running into the premier's official residence in Dhaka, waving to the camera as they celebrated.
