Cash For Query Case: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has made the decision to stay out of the scandal involving its MP Mahua Moitra, who has been accused of accepting money in exchange for raising issues in parliament. TMC Rajya Sabha MP came under fire from opposition after Darshan Hiranandani, the CEO of the real estate-to-energy company Hiranandani, claimed that Moitra targeted Gautam Adani in order to "malign and embarrass" Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose "impeccable reputation" gave opposition no opportunity to attack him.

Reluctant to speak about the controversary involving Moita, TMC West Bengal general secretary and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said the party has nothing to say on this issue. "...No comments...Regarding this issue, the TMC will not say anything... The related person may answer this, not the TMC party..." Ghosh said as quoted by news agency ANI.

Another senior TMC leader who wished to remain unnamed claimed that the party's leadership is reluctant to stir up controversy and as a result "will be maintaining distance from it."

While TMC chose to maintain silence, the BJP leader Rahul Sinha said the West Bengali government cannot escape its obligation to take accountability. "The TMC always tries to shrug off its responsibility whenever its leaders are either arrested or land into trouble. The TMC needs to explain whether it supports Mahua Moitra or not," he said as quoted by news agency PTI.

Cash For Query Case: How Controversy Begins

Earlier in the week, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai alleged that Moitra had accepted favours from Hiranandani in exchange for raising questions in Parliament. In response, TMC MP filed a defamation suit against them before the Delhi High Court. However, Moitra has raised questions over the credibility of Hiranandani's affidavit, alleging that it was "drafted by the PMO" and he was forced to sign it after being "threatened" with a "total shutdown" of his family's businesses.
