The Union government on Monday issued notification of hike in salaries and pensions of the Member of Parliaments and ex-parliamentarians. The revised pay grade will come into effect from April 1, 2023.

The notification issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has also mentioned an increase in daily allowances(DA) for MPs, along with an additional pension for every year of service in excess of five years for ex-parliamentarians.

How much will MP's, ex-parliamentatians get?

As per the notification, the MPs will now get a monthly salary of Rs 1.24 lakh as compared to Rs 1 lakh.

For the sitting MPs, daily allowances have been increased by Rs 500 to Rs 2,500. Meanwhile, the pension of the former members of the parliament has been increased by Rs 6,000 to Rs 31,000. Earlier, they used to get Rs 25,000 as pension.

As far as additional pension is concerned, it has also been increased by Rs 500 to Rs 2,500 per month for every year of service in excess of five years. Earlier, this pension used to be Rs 2,000.

It must be noted that the government of India enjoys the power under the Salary, Allowances, and Pension of Members of Parliament Act to increase the salaries and pensions o the basis of the Cost Inflation Index specified in the Income Tax Act of 1961 and notify it.

Karnataka approves 100 per cent hike

Meanwhile, in Karnataka, the state government has approved a 100 per cent salary hike for the Chief Minister, Ministers, and MLAs, sparking widespread debate. The approval was granted for two amendment bills--the Karnataka Ministers' Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Karnataka Legislature Members' Salaries, Pensions, and Allowances (Amendment) Bill 2025. Sources indicate that these bills are likely to be tabled in the Assembly on Thursday.
