The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday formed a judicial committee to probe the violent protest in Ladakh that claimed the lives of four civilians and left 90 injured last month.

The government-formed panel will be led by retired Supreme Court judge BS Chauhan to find out the circumstances that turned the peaceful protest to a serious law and order situation.

The panel will also probe the police action and the resultant death of four persons in Leh. In a statement, the MHA said, "In order to ensure an impartial inquiry, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, today, notified a judicial inquiry to be conducted by Hon’ble Dr Justice B S Chauhan, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, into the circumstances leading to the serious law and order situation, the police action and the resultant unfortunate death of the four individuals".

Among other members of the judicial probe are Mohan Singh Parihar, Retired District and Sessions Judge, who will serve as Judicial Secretary, and Tushar Anand, IAS, who will act as Administrative Secretary, according to LiveLaw.

The MHA has directed the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of the Union Territory of Ladakh to extend all necessary support, administrative and logistical, to facilitate the judicial inquiry.
