The Indian government has raised concerns with Elon Musk-owned social media platform X regarding its AI chatbot, Grok, which has been generating controversial and unfiltered responses. Officials have reached out to X to seek clarification on the chatbot’s use of Hindi slang and offensive language, emphasizing that all digital platforms must adhere to Indian laws.

The government has reiterated the importance of self-regulation for social media and OTT platforms, according to sources cited by News18.  This has reignited the debate over freedom of expression versus censorship. However, officials maintain that their intent is not to suppress Grok but to ensure that AI-generated content operates within the legal framework.

The Ministry of Information and Technology has also initiated an inquiry into Grok’s responses after several users highlighted its tendency to use slang, spread unverified rumours and provide factually incorrect replies. Government sources confirmed to PTI that discussions with X are ongoing to understand the reasons behind the chatbot’s behaviour.

Opposition Criticises Government’s Actions

Grok has recently sparked political controversy, with opposition parties using the chatbot’s responses to target the ruling government. Some responses have been seen as critical of the Prime Minister and the BJP while portraying Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a favourable light. The backlash has led to allegations that the government is attempting to control digital narratives and silence dissent.

X Takes Legal Action Against Government Regulations

In response to government scrutiny, X has filed a lawsuit in a Karnataka court, challenging what it perceives as censorship under the IT Act. The legislation grants authorities the power to regulate online content deemed abusive, sexually explicit, or threatening to national security. X’s legal move signals a broader conflict between global tech companies and Indian regulatory frameworks.
