The Central government has said that it is heading forward with the much-awaited Tribune Flyover project in Chandigarh after the Punjab and Haryana high court lifted its 10-month-long 2019 stay on cutting of trees.

Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is currently in the process of preparing a revised project report and cost estimate, based on the updated Schedule of Rates (SOR).

The status was revealed by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in Parliament on Thursday. He was replying to the query raised by Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari during the ongoing session.

Gadkari said that five years had passed since the project’s initial approval and since the high court had lifted the stay, a revised project report and cost estimate was being prepared.

It is worth mentioning here that Tribune is a 1.6 km-long flyover that is to be built from near the GMCH-32 roundabout to the railway overbridge on Dakshin Marg and will pass over Tribune Chowk.

In 2016, the Central government approved it. In line with that, the then UT administrator VP Singh Badnore laid the foundation stone on March 3, 2019.

However, the project came to still when in November 2019, the high court stayed the cutting of trees along the roadside. After 10 months, the stay was lifted.

However, reports suggest that the revised cost estimate has been submitted to the ministry two weeks ago. The estimate was submitted after the ministry issued a letter to the Chandigarh administration questioning prolonged delay in January.

It must be noted that the flyover is crucial for dealing massive traffic around the Tribune Chowk. Reportedly, over 1.43 lakh vehicles cross Tribune Chowk  daily.
