According to police, the two men were drunk and assumed the house was unoccupied. They broke in using an iron rod and attacked Ashwini when she raised an alarm. She was struck multiple times and dragged into the kitchen before the attackers fled. Family members, who arrived nearly ten hours later after failing to reach her by phone, found her unconscious and shifted her to Chengalpet Government Hospital.
According to a Times Of India report, Ashwini remained in critical condition for three days before succumbing to her injuries. Her family also reported that 11 sovereigns of gold jewellery were missing from the house.

On Monday, Ashwini’s relatives and local residents held a protest demanding the arrest of the second accused and closure of the nearby Tasmac liquor shop, which they claim has become a hub for anti-social elements.
