The first air-conditioned Electric Multiple Unit (AC EMU) under the Chennai Division of Southern Railway commenced operations on Saturday, running between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu. The maiden service, flagged off at 7 am, marks a significant enhancement in the suburban rail network, often regarded as the lifeline of Chennai and its surrounding areas.

Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory, the state-of-the-art 12-car AC EMU rake boasts several modern features aimed at improving passenger comfort and safety. These include fully air-conditioned coaches, automatic sliding doors, sealed gangways for easy movement, stainless steel seating, wide glass windows, and aesthetic lighting. 

The coaches also have GPS-based LED displays, CCTV cameras, and a passenger talk-back system for emergencies. Additionally, energy-efficient regenerative electro-pneumatic brakes promise up to 35 per cent savings in power, while air spring suspension enhances ride quality.

Chennai AC EMU Routes

The AC EMU will operate on two key suburban corridors: Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu and Chennai Beach–Tambaram. A total of six services (three in each direction) will be operated across these routes from Monday to Saturday. Four of these services will cover the full stretch to Chengalpattu, while two will run up to Tambaram. No services are scheduled on Sundays.

Chennai AC EMU Fare

Southern Railway introduced a separate fare structure for these AC EMU services. Ticket prices range from Rs 35 for distances up to 10 km to Rs 105 for 56–60 km. Monthly season tickets are priced between Rs 620 and Rs 2,115, depending on the travel distance. Passengers holding First Class season tickets are not allowed to use AC EMU services, as a separate fare system applies.

After witnessing success in Mumbai, the AC EMU service has been introduced in Chennai to cater to the high passenger volume on the Beach-Chengalpattu route. Regular commuters expressed joy over the new addition, especially as it comes during peak summer. The initiative aims to provide a comfortable, hassle-free travel experience for suburban rail users.
