Chennai Metro Expansion: In good news for the residents of Chennai, the Tamil Nadu government has granted in-principle approval to a new metro line between Koyambedu to Pattabiram (Outer Ring Road), as per a report by TOI.

The state special initiatives department issued an order stating that the detailed project report (DPR) submitted by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) was approved on April 28. The DPR provides for extending the metro line from Avadi to Pattabiram. The corridor is crucial as it will cover major points in the city, like the Outer Ring Road and the ELCOT facility.

The funding for the Koyambedu-Pattabiram corridor will be sought from the Union government and external loans from bilateral and multilateral agencies.

Details of project

The corridor between Koyambedu and Pattabiram will be 21.76 km long. It would be built with three flyovers and will have 19 stations. Some of these stations will be Ambattur Estate, Dunlop, OT, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi, Hindu College, and Pattabiram.

Estimated Cost of project

The project is estimated to be completed at a cost of Rs 9,928 crore based on 2025 prices. The estimate includes the highways component of Rs 464 crore for the construction of the three flyovers. The flyovers will provide seamless integration with the city’s traffic network.

The government had earlier permitted CMRL to prepare a DPR and detailed feasibility report for linking Koyambedu amd Avadi. Upon detailed studies, it was decided to expand it up to Pattabiram. The idea behind this was to enhance regional connectivity and support the western suburbs, which are developing at a faster pace.

According to the report, the DPR has been sent to the Centre. Upon approval, the funding arrangement process will start.

Airport-Kilambakkam project gets approval

In another major update, the Tamil Nadu government has approved the Airport-Kilambakkam project and has sent the DPR to the Central government. The Airport-Kilambakkam corridor will be constructed entirely as an elevated stretch along GST Road, covering a distance of 15.46 km. The DPR was approved on April 17 and was recommended to Centre.
