Chennai Metro Update: In a major development, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on Friday conducted a trial run between Porur Junction station and Poonamallee Bypass station. The authority stated that trials in both the tracks will now proceed as per plan, as the trial in the up line of the stretch had already been conducted earlier. It further stated that Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro will provide convenience to the residents of several regions by significantly cutting the travel time and reducing the traffic congestion.
The CMRL had stated that there are a total of 10 stations from Porur Junction station to Poonamallee Bypass station, adding the route will provide relief to the residents of these regions. The authority further stated that Poonamallee Metro Depot is used as the nerve center for testing purposes. While providing details, the officials stated that the testing of the signaling system will be done in the upcoming few days.

"The first run will be for 20-25 km/h and will be automatically around 70-80 km/h after the completion of works. Currently, six train systems will continue testing. Signalling system testing will be done in the following days. By the end of December, it’s expected to be commissioned,” MD-CMRL MA Siddique was quoted as saying by DT Next. “Next line is from Porur through Vadapalani to Power House. After this, Porur, Alapakkam and Chennai Trade Centre would be completed,” he added.

The authority further stated that various tests will be conducted in Stage 1 to provide convenience to the passengers on the route. It added that the priority is to promote public transportation among the residents to reduce the traffic congestion and improve air quality. Earlier on Thursday, the authority stated that the Chennai Metro is likely to receive its first driverless metro trains by 2027, adding that the metro services will be extended in the upcoming years.
