Chennai Metro Update: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials have reportedly stated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery line is likely to be finalised by January 15, 2026. They further stated that the project will provide a significant boost to the regional connectivity, as its total length will be over 21 kilometers and will connect 19 metro stations. The stretch will provide convenience to thousands of commuters by cutting the travel time and reducing the traffic congestion. Earlier in August, the metro authority had awarded the contract to Systra MVA Consulting for Rs 96.19 lakh.
While providing details, the official stated that once completed, the final report will be submitted to the state government, which will later be forwarded to the centre for its approval. “For all this to complete, and to initiate construction, it will take more than two years,” a CMRL official was quoted as saying by the DT Next. Apart from this, the officials also informed that the proposed stretch has been designed to reduce the traffic in the key regions during the peak hours.
The Metro line is likely to pass through some of the busiest regions of the capital city, including Tambaram, Velachery, and Guindy. The route will boost the regional connectivity by linking the residential areas to IT firms, colleges, and commercial spaces.
“As the entire stretch has been planned for 21.5 km, the stations have also been earmarked at vital locations with high Peak Hour Peak Direction (PHPD) traffic. Additionally, as this line connects Guindy, the location will transform into a bigger transit and commercial space than it already is,” a senior CMRL official asserted.
Earlier last month, the CMRL had stated that several expansion projects will be announced in the upcoming months to improve the connectivity and provide a financial boost.
