Chennai News: The long-awaited solar-powered ropeway project along Chennai’s Marina Beach is set to take a major step forward, with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) likely to float tenders for construction soon, officials confirmed.
During a recent city council meeting, Chennai Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran informed councillors that the project, first proposed in 2022, is now nearing the implementation stage. The update came in response to a query from Ward 104 Councillor T. V. Semmozhi, who initially suggested the idea as part of a plan to enhance tourism along the city’s coastline, according to a Swarajya report.

Semmozhi said the upcoming ropeway would not only offer visitors a stunning aerial view of the Marina coastline but also serve as a major tourism booster for Chennai. “It will provide a unique experience for both residents and tourists while reducing environmental impact through the use of solar energy,” the councillor added.
About The Ropeway Project
The proposed ropeway is envisioned as both a tourist attraction and an eco-friendly urban transport option. Spanning approximately five kilometres, it will connect key points along the Marina stretch, Anna Square, Kannagi Statue, Vivekananda House and the Light House.
According to the GCC, the system will be powered entirely by solar energy and will operate at an elevation of around 25 feet, offering passengers panoramic views of the Marina promenade and the Bay of Bengal.
Officials added that the project could benefit not just tourists but also daily commuters, as the route along Kamarajar Salai includes major landmarks such as Queen Mary’s College and the University of Madras, as well as several government offices.
