Chennai News:  To reduce traffic congestion, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) have chosen six main roads for expansion. Sections of LB Road in Adyar, New Avadi Road from Kilpauk to Villivakkam, Paper Mills Road from Perambur to Kolathur, Radhakrishnan Salai from Marina Beach to Gemini Circle, Cooks Road, and Perambur Barracks Road from Purasawakkam to Perambur are among the roadways that would be enlarged by eight to 15 feet.

According to Mayor R Priya, the CMDA's Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) program would be used to widen four of these roads, while the GCC would pay for the long-term project that includes Kolathur and Perambur Barracks Road extensions. Acquisition talks have already started with private property owners.

“Widening the roads in North Chennai will help decongest these areas, and work will commence by the year-end,” Mayor Priya said according to a TOI report.

The completion of corridor and station development for Corridor 3 by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) may cause delays in the extension of LB Road, Radhakrishnan Salai, and Perambur Barracks Road.

The 3.8 km Paper Mills Road in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Zone 6 (Akilandeshwari, assistant executive engineer), has stated that the width would be increased from 8.5 to 18 metres. “The widening will occur between the 200-feet road and the Perambur High Road stretch, costing Rs 70 crore,” she said.

Similarly, the GCC intends to widen Cooks Road from 16 to 22 metres over a distance of 240 metres. “This expansion, between Cooks Road and Stephenson Road junction, will cost Rs 5.2 crore,” Akilandeshwari added.

To examine the current road widths and calculate the necessary additions, a consultant has been hired. The consultant will shortly start working on Radhakrishnan Salai, concentrating on homes close to the intersection of Mylapore.

The executive engineer of the bus route roads department, Murugesan, stated that future four-lane flyovers will be made possible by the existing expansion projects.
